Harlan Independent Preschool
Harlan, Kentucky
Building on the success of their existing preschool program the Harlan Independent School District committed their energies and resources to constructing a new facility adjacent to their existing campus. The owner wanted the new preschool’s scale and form to respond to the adjacent residential neighborhood.
One of the significant aspects of their efforts is the designated play area. The design solution was to wrap the building around the play area to confine the perimeter and provide direct access from the L-shaped corridor to the play area. This corridor will be filled with natural light provided by large windows and these openings will allow a visual connection from the interior of the building to the play area from the majority of instructional spaces.
Another important aspect of their preschool is site circulation, keeping children safe at the drop off and pick up locations. A large quantity of vehicular stack space was desired to facilitate drop-off and pickup during peak times of the day.
